Hi!! I'm new in this area. Own a 1954 S-T Alpine undergoing restoration in
Kansas City, Mo. Both Parts and Service Manuals are with car, but can quote
from orginal Owner's Handbook on subject.
It's called the "Ignition Override Control".
"The Manual Ignition over-ride control, marked 'I,' is mounted on the right
hand side of the facia centre panel. Pulling out this control advances the
ignition timing progressively by up to 15 [degrees] (on crankshaft). For
normal running this control should be approximately half-way out, thus
allowing the ignition to be either advanced or retarded to obtain maximum
performance.
The control should be pushed fully in when starting."
Hope this helps.
