Chris,

        This was discussed at length some time ago, but FWIW, I have
used the manufacturers' (Rootes) recommended S.A.E.30 non-detergent
motor oil in the '54 Sunbeam Talbot MK IIA gearbox for the last 34 years
and it is still transmitting power to the rear end. I have never had a
problem.
