30W NON-detergent is the stuff. I've used both detergent and
non-detergent 30W for the last 130K+ in my Series V (at least 200K total
miles on the tranny). No ill effects yet.
Sounds like a prior owner ran it dry once or twice for it to disintigrate on
you. Rear seal probably went out on him when he wasn't looking (or
listening).
