I'm at about the same point with a 289 V8 Ford.  Only difference is that
the distributor has to be in for the oil pump to work and I haven't
installed it yet.  2 X the pistons and I can easily turn the engine
over by hand.  I'd back up and see what's binding.  Could you easily
turn the pump by hand before it was installed?
