If it recommends engine oil, usually S.A.E. 30 Non-Detergent, use it. It has been stated many times that the sulphur content in the gear oil will affect the syncromesh rings. My manuals recommend engine oil and I haven't had a problem in 34 years of ownership however the gearbox of a friends Sunbeam Talbot is now in pieces from the use of gear oil.
