Engine conversions

We all want more power, higher reliability and easier maintenance... mee too!

I always thought the Ford 289 was a tight fit and perhaps too tight for an amateur conversion. The Ford V6 seemed to address my concerns so I acquired a '74 Ford V6 and a C5 automatic transmission with the thought of converting one of my Alpines. It looked like a good fit until I got to the point of hanging the engine in the engine compartment. There was only an inch of clearance between the head and the steering box leaving no room for an exhaust header... and I'm not prepared to reengineer the steering. Because of that (and a couple of other reasons), I reassembled the Alpine back to its original configuration.

I'd still like to do the conversion but at this point, not without additional insight. I was under the impression this had been done, but where and by whom and what problems were encountered... I dunno. ...that was five or six years ago.

If the V6/C5 doesn't make sense, what other conversions might I consider?

(If this has been covered before, and likely it has, perhaps someone can point me to an FAQ.)

Again my thanks,

Larry
