Yes, on some early '70s models, if you just happened to floor the throttle while switching off the ignition, there would usually be one heckofan explosion 10 to 20 seconds later from the gas fumes that would accumulate in the hot exhaust system. In more prankish days, it was a good way to scare the living daylights out of someone. However, it did tend to be rather rough on the muffler and resonator; fortunately those were pre-converter models. Seems Mazda sorted this out by the late '70s. BTW, I used the rotary wagon to haul parts for my first Brit. car, a '58 MG Magnette ZB. Bob Douglas '62 Alpine S.II
