Howard, Congratulations on the new project. I picked up an S.II in similar
condition last September. As most would probably guess, the major problem
areas were the hydraulics and fuel system.
I suspect you're looking at an overhaul on both brakes and clutch unless the PO
happened to do this just before parking it. I ordered hoses, cylinders,
shoes, and rebuild kits from Sunbeam Specialties and Victoria British - two
suppliers you'll want to get to know if you don't already. I've found Rick at
SS to be extremely helpful in sorting out part related questions. If you go
the rebuild route on the cylinders, check the kits out carefully when they
arrive; there was a batch of incomplete and generally low quality ones in
distribution late last year. I seem to remember they were a Lockheed brand out
of Australia.
You may want to consider cleaning and lining the fuel tank if it hasn't been
done previously. Rust and other buildup were so bad on mine, I couldn't keep
the engine running. I probably killed an hour or so checking the carbs, line,
and fuel pump before figuring out the problem was in the tank. It cost about
$100 to have a local radiator shop clean, solder, and line the tank. DIY kits
can do the job for about half this cost.
Good luck!
Regards,
Bob Douglas Alpine S.II
