The series 4 tranny had no synchro in 1st. Your second gear no sync is
simply because it is worn out. This is common.

The tranny is easy to rebuild if the basic parts are not worn out. You
are looking at synchro rings and detent springs/circlip. (assuming
bearings are OK, these boxes are pretty sloppy re. tolerences). You
need a good vise. No special tools required.

The series V tranny will fit but I believe some parts have to be
changed. Lets see - maybe the clutch disk (spline differences),
flywheel. Im sure that someone on the list can enlighten.

I put a Ser V engine onto a Ser IV tranny, so the parts swap is
somewhat the other way round.
