I went on an Alpine chase this weekend.
Last Thursday, my dad called to tell me that he saw an Alpine III on
the side of the road in Commerce, GA. By Friday, he found and called
the owner who said that he had two cars for $800. Not knowing the
condition of these, I promptly drove from Atlanta on Saturday to look
them over.
The Series III was a extremely rusty. The floor pans were gone and the
rust was traveling up the sides. The front valence was completely
gone, and a 1X6 was in its place. Of course, the rockers and lower
wheel arches were rusted too. The guy said that the engine had been
rebuilt 2 years ago, but never ran because when they were putting
everything back together, they broke the shift linkage housing. Oh,
and the drivers door was missing as well as all the interior.
The other car was a Series 5. No engine or trans. We had to cut a path
through the overgrowth with a machete just to get to it. I couldn't
get close enough (didn't want to) to see what kind of shape it was in.
It has been sitting with no top for who knows how many years.
Anyway, this is a classic story of a redneck who thinks he has
something good. I offered him $200 and thought I was doing him a
favor. He wouldn't budge off the $800 price. If anyone wants them, I
can give you directions.
Sorry Scott, I forgot to get the serial no. for the III. I think it
was xxx3257 or something.
