From Experience, I would highly recommend a pressure Wash first. Rent
one or drive the car to one, but blast everything in the engine
compartment, suspension, and under the car to at least half the way
back. This will remove the vast majority of the gook, grime, unknown
road kill organic matter (neighbors cat)...(No letters please!), dirt
and any flaking paint which will become visible and easily touched up
while the engine is out.
Again....I H I G H L Y recommend doing this.

PS It's also a good time to re apply under coating in the tranny
tunnel, and the rest of the under side...
