Yes, I have seen that as well. However, most of the American bult 4
speed tranny's of that era and into the seventies, (i haven't looked
inside a recent ly built box so I cant say about the current boxes.),
ALL had brass or perhaps a soft bronze alloy for the synchro rings. I
have NEVER seen anything else. All of my American tranny all used 90w
hypoid gear oil, as do the standard rear ends. Possi units can require
something different or an anti slick agent, like that supplied by
Mopar....(Chrysler for you non Dodge fans).

I have never seen a problem, other than stiffness in very cold weather.
On the other hand, I have seen and driven many cars where the tranny
oil has been changed to Engine oil. On these cars, down shift typically
crunched a bit every time, and going to first from third at 20-25 mile
per hour was a gaurenteed grind and crunch. Engine oil delivers little
dampening when its hot. The synchros have nothing to help them in
spinning up the input shaft.
This is of course, only my opinion and experience. Make your own
judgements...it's your car !!
