Well , I managed to pick up a set of 72 spoke bolt-on wire wheels last
week, brand new at a price I could not refuse. Now I have had a chance to
try them on the car (without tires) I have a few questions for the list.
The fronts fit fine but the rear rims foul the outside lip of the brake
drums and need 3/16 spacers and probably longer wheel studs. The outside
lip of the drums have 4 equally spaced casting lugs on them that appear
to be there only for the purpose of balancing the drum, as two of my lugs
are ground down and drilled as if to lighten one side of the drum . A
friend suggested I just ground all these protrusions off, so the wheels
would mate with the drum without spacers and longer studs - comments
please!
My second question is tires. The rims are 5J X 13 . I'm currently running
stock rims with 165 80 13. I'd like to put new tires on the wires, but
what? Also, is there a clearance problem using wider rims and tires
especially if I decide to go with the spacer.
Thanks
