     John,

There is a good buyers guide on the Alpine Web site
     http://www.team.net/www/rootes/sunbeam/alpine/mk1-5/index.html
This should give you the rust spots to look for. The rust behind the
front wheels is the one to look out for because that often means that
water has gotten into the rocker pannels and that will effect the over
all stength of the uni-body construction. This one of the hardest to
workon (I understand that is not a problem I have had on the Alpine I
     curently have).

Is a 68 a good year--- Yes that should be a Series V and close to
the end of the production for Alpines overall I think the V was the
strongest of the Alpines and with care will last for years as a daily
driver. Part are not a problem there are still enough of us out hear
spending our income to keep the suppliers in buisness. Check the web
site for suppliers I am not at home with me catologs.

If the engine runs and the oil pressure is 20-25 lbs at idle atfer
warming (and the rust is not bad) I would spend the $1650.

     Good Luck,

Hi, my name is John D'Agostino, I'm on the British car list. I looked at
a 68 Alpine over the weekend and could use some advice. The car is
fairly complete, the doors, rockers, floors, and trunk are solid. There
is a hole in the lower front fender near the drivers door, same in back.
The right front fender and valence need some repair also. Looks like a
poor repair of a minor accident. The battery box is bad, and it needs
new carpets, probably a top as well. The drive train is intact and the
owner claims it runs fine (the battery was out) and it will need a few
other odds and ends. I'm mostly concerned with the body and rust, the
other items can be fixed later. He is asking 1650.00 for it.
Any thoughts on what to look for specifically? I plan on making a driver
out of it, but I want something solid. Should I keep looking? Is 68 a
good year for Alpines? Are parts like bumpers, bezels, lenses etc available?

Thanks in advance.
