Love these British cars, eh?
Your sump has a one half inch (across the flats) hex socket, which ideally
needs a one half inch allen key as you inferred. I have a 64 engine with
the same arrangement and I use the end of a 3/8" socket type screw driver
which exactly fits the hole. A crescent wrench on the shaft provides ample
turning power.
Later cars came with a 1" hex bolt with the same screw in thread, so you
might try to locate one of them and make the change.
