I have enjoyed 'meeting' many of you since Jay Laifman suggested we
introduce ourselves so I hope you all will allow me to step into the
theme. My name is Rob Carpenter [I am using my son, Brian's , e-mail
address for now]. I am married to Beryl [28 years] and have two sons.
My first Alpine sighting was in July 1966 in Anchorage Alaska. I was a
college sophomore driving my Vauxhaul Victor. I bought it and enjoyed it
greatly until I sold out in March 1969. Beryl and I had married in Dec
1968 and drove from Seattle to Baltimore in 7 days through a nationwide
blizzard. We drove back in March and sold the Alpine rather than drive to
Alaska in it. [Reason for being in Baltimore? Uncle Sam set me there to
train at Fort Holabird, then to Fort Richardson Alaska in
counterintelligence].
She [my Alpine] was white [moonstone?] with red interior. A series IV
but other than that I knew really nothing about its heritage.
I have wanted another chance and in 1996 began serious reading and,
with my son's help, found this list and the Rootes web page. I checked
out two Alpines in northern Calif [one a sad case on the beautiful coast
and one a nice garage rebuild in Sacramento, but not stock and too high$].
On October 7, 1996 I found my Series V Alpine, 395007893, white with
black interior [color code 92: moonstone?]. It is, to my untrained eye,
quite 'proper' with the original engine.
I have been REALLY pleased by the friendly members of the local
Pacific Tiger Club who love big engines [latest tech session putting a 5
Liter SVO engine in someone's Tiger] but know Alpines very well and will
make it possible for me to make my Alpine road worthy [starting with the
rear and front ends].
At 50 I am older than most of you who have introduced yourselves but
am among the newest in experience. I enjoy reading the list postings and
am learning.
