I just finished redoing my Zenith carbs. I had new shafts made from a
close match by a friend in my local car club and he also pressed teflon
bushings into the bases. No more air leak around the bases. I also had
problems with gas leaking from around the top covers. Turns out that
there were two problem areas. First, the top cover is not bored out
larger than the hold down screws and tends to bind up a little keeping the
top from completely compressing the gasket. I simply took a drill bit
that was slightly larger that the hole and reamed the holes out by hand.
Now the cover fits tightly and no more leak. The second problem was a
loose fitting accelerator pump lever arm where the shaft crosses through
the top cover. I simply wrapped the shaft with teflon tape (the type used
for pipe threads) and reinstalled it into the top cover. The shaft is now
sealed and the odor of spilled fuel is much improved. Hope this tip helps
someone else.
