Steering Box Refit

The PO of my S4 GT somehow managed push the end of the steering
column through the back face of the steering box. What a big hole
and what a mess! And it was an absolute bear to get the box outta there.

Not having a shop manual handy, my partner in crime and I removed the
brake master cylinder, popped the two steering linkage joints closest to the
steering box, removed the mounting nuts/bolts at both ends of the linkage
(at the pivot points), completely loosened the steering column and out she
came. When I got home, I managed to find the shop manual and after
reviewing it found out that we could have saved a bit time by using a
"special" Rootes tool (can't remember the name) to pop a single piece of the
linkage off of the steering box spline to remove the box alone. Since I will
still have to remove this linkage in order to service the steering box, can anyone
who's been through this suggest a modern equivalent of the special Rootes puller?

Question #2:
The shop manual directions are a bit fuzzy on putting the box back
together. Any suggestions on the type of grease that should be used
to keep the small and large ball bearings in their respective places for
preloading (adding the shims) and final reassembly? Is this grease really
going to keep the balls in place so I don't go out of my mind doing
this job?

Question #3:
What quantity of beer will be required to complete this job? (To
give you a frame of reference, we both starting thinking Chelsea Clinton
is smokin' hot at around 4-5 beers.)

Question #4:
Any suggestions for soothing background music? I only have an 8-track
tape player.

Many thanks,

Gary Schotland
