Hmm, I never had any trouble with my old uni-synch. You may need to
adjust the center cone in or out to get the proper flow across the
gauge. Maybe mine is different. Mine has a little floating ball in a
about 3" tube that you keep verticle and the ball floats up and down in
this tube depending on the vacuum at the plate.

If you place this on your carb, and the idle instantly goes up, then it
is running way too lean. The restriction is reducing the air volume and
the added vacuum in the carb is increasing the fuel ratio, just like the
old butterfly chokes. If the idle goes up, it's too lean. It should
stay the same, or drop very slightly. Going Up is definitely out of
tune. Here's a proof test for this. while the engine is idleing, start
to remove a major vacuum line from the manifold below the carb. Don't
pull it all the way off, just kind of crack it open slowly. An engine
in proper tune will only increase in RPM slightly (approx 15 -35 RPM) as
you start to let in fresh air. As you increase the amount of fresh air,
the engine will start to stumble, and the RPM's will drop as it goes too
lean. If your car's engine starts to race (RPM's going up more than a
150 or so), then it is running too Rich, and the fresh air is making
burn more effeciently and therefore spinning faster with the same amount
of gas!

Have fun, and be SURE to reattach that vacuum line !!

Rich
