More than one person has suggested replacing the crank bolt/starter piece 
with a regular bolt.  How then do you turn the engine to adjust the 
valves?  My other car has a nifty crank that fits into to slots on the 
pulley.  My guess is that you are removing the spark plugs and pulling on 
the fan belt.  I've always been afraid of getting my fingers pinched in 
the pulley and belt - does that not happen?
