Wow - and Wow again Gale - look at all the traffic your innocent question has spawned!
Once upon a time - there was a group of Alpine engineers sitting around in the canteen.
There was not much conversation so, to stir things up, one of them said "how can we pay homage to our prince, the Prince of Darkness?"
Another said "we could make sure that every Alpine has a crankshaft pulley that will accept a crank handle - and, of course, provide a crank handle with every Alpine - including the proper clips in the trunk to retain the handle in propah British fashion."
Yet another spoke up - "If we do this right - we can make sure that every Rootes Group car has these capabilities - since they are all in cahoots with THE PRINCE."
But, they encountered some difficulty spreading this concept - the Hillman engineers never sat in the canteen with the Alpine engineers (it could be contagious) - nor did they sit with the Humber engineers (nor with the engineers of whatever other cars Rootes made at the time).
So, we know that all (Series) Alpines come with a crankable pulley - but we don't know about the 'others'.
In any case, ALL the Rootes engineers turned into dynosaurs and we are left with these 'buck-toothed' crankshaft pulleys for which not everyone has a handle.
[My Black Beauty came with a crank handle - it had about a 15 degree bend in the middle of the straight part - I managed to get it closer to 'straight' using my mega bench vise. I can't remember if it had a slip handle or was fixed - you'll have to ask 'The Mole' who now has the little darlin' (I think).]
Cheers,
Barrie
