Oh-oh. Dipsticks go directly in the block on 1725's. Check the block ID
number located just in front of the oil filter base.

If you speak only of Alpine engines, then you may be right... but Rootes used
the 1725 in the entire range of cars, with mods made to suit. The original
block from my Commer 2500 van was bog-standard Hillman Minx, from the
research I've done. Cast iron head, single downdraft 1bbl Zenith, and a
dipstick into the oil pan. The hole on the block where the Alpine stick goes
was never machined. Engine number should help, and check the casting of
the block on the driver's side of the engine. There should be some
identifying marks there.
