This is all well and good, if the car in question was built after
1981. In that year, automakers the world over adopted a standard system of 18
digit VIN numbers, in which the digit is indeed the country, as the list
shows. The 10th digit is also the model year, 1980=A, 1981=B, etc. Prior to
1981, however, all bets are off.
