Greetings List,

Thank you Richard Atherton for your excellent commentary on solid wood
dash boards. This is a good arguement in favor of either stock or
laminated plywood dash boards unless you have the ability to do the
craftrsmanship and responsibility of care of the wood one.

I suspect that my wood dash will require far less maintenance and
structural considerations as the wood on a boat, but if viewed in that
manner one would have no problem taking care of it. Rigidity, and
resistance to warping is one of the reasons I decided to keep the full
3/4" thickness. Also, the bolts to the vehicle body in combination with
the lower trim piece, which is a steel reinforcing bar, give quite rigid
support for the length of the dash, leaving only a few inches. Once
complete, saturation with good quality wood oil to seal out moisture and
regular care proportionate to cleaning the carpets, I do not thing it is
going to warp. One must, of course choose a seasoned, tight grained,
appropriate chunck of wood in the first place or the project is doomed
to eventually having a barn wood dash.

Later,
Steve VR
