Thanks *again* Jarrid,
There is indeed oil leaking from the side plates, and it did also appear
that the sump gasket is contributing to the leak. I will try using thread
sealer on the side cover bolts before I get too carried away. The timing
cover gasket is also leaking.
I don't mind a bit of a leak, but four puddles, each an inch across, is too
much.
The gearbox and sump drain plugs seem to be leaking, so I'll get new washers
for them, the timing cover is another culprit but it can wait until I see
how much it is contributing.
There are some gaskets in the spares trunk that came with the car, some have
part numbers attached, the sump gasket is obvious, but there are some
mysteries there.
I intend to take them along to the local Sunbeam club meeting and see if
anyone can identify them. Six brand-new sets of points were also in the
trunk. I wonder if they are hard to come by 'down under'?
Cheers,
Paul.

It is doubtfull that the sump is contributing too much to your oil slick.
But rather the side cover panel, and the timing cover gasket and the
harmonic balance scroll.
It is a common mistake when building an alpine motor not to use
thread sealer on the side cover bolts. All the bolts that go into the
head go directly into the oily engine cavity. The result is an engine
that just weeps oil, and it looks like it comes from the sump.
The alpine has no front or rear seals, so an engine that does'nt
lay down at least a little oil is very rare.
