This may or may not be of any use, but, what the heck!
I've never run across a failure like this on my Rootes vehicles, but it
has often cropped up at my workplace, a VW/Saab dealer. Sometimes, older
under-hood wiring, when very hot, increases in resistance value. The
necessary voltage to trip the solenoid may not be passing through the wiring
and switches. Check the voltage at the trigger terminal on the solenoid with
an accurate voltmeter. Sometimes the drop can be 4 to 6 volts!! A little
careful rewiring should do to restore voltage on an LBC.(In the VWs, we place
a Ford-type starter relay under the hood, and feed the starter trip circuit
right from the battery)
It's worth a try...... and, it's worth finding a crank handle for your tool
kit, too!!
Mine has save my behind several times!
