Kurt, If it looks like reasonable paint, I would leave it on. Maybe put
a light coat of Rustoleum satin gloss black over the original. I believe
I left the original paint on mine and while I have not peered at them too
closely I think it has stayed on. Lacquer would be too brittle, but I
think ordinary enamel will flex enough.

Most british cars of this vintage use UNF and UNC that are the same as our
course/fine threads for all sizes above 1/4 inch. Below 1/4 inch, the
threads may be different. If I remember correctly, however, the most
common smaller size (I think it is a 2BA) is interchangeable with our
10-32.
