Sunbeam started out as a firm called John Marston Ltd in the last
century. They were tinsmiths and japanners, producing a variety of
household goods. Towards the end of the century they began building
bicycles. So the story goes, when John Marston's wife saw the first
bicycle produced by the works, she remarked on how the black enamelled
frame reflected the sun. The name stuck and Sunbeam branched out into
cars and motorcycles.
