Yup - as luck would have it, in the same batch of postings that included
Tom's query about the amount of dues, was an acknowledgement from Dave &
Sarah Jarrett about receiving my nine month delinquent dues, and information
about the coming increase.
I don't recall ever seeing the amount of dues listed in the Horn, except when
included in the minutes of the Annual General Meeting. So, if you misplace
the renewal form as I have now done several times, you just ain't got no
reference.
As to the dues increase - well, they do have a new Labour government in power
now. I guess they are anticipating some inflationary pressures.
While thinking about the dues structure and such items, there is a
distinction in the way North American clubs do things. Every Yank and Canuck
club that I know of has the amount of dues in a prominent place, usually with
the club officers and address data. Almost all of them credit dues from the
date of joining, so you pay a year's dues and get a year's membership
benefits. Both of the UK clubs that I belong to have an annual expiration
date for all members without regard to when you join. So your annual fees
may buy you substantially less time than you think.
If you are not currently a member, I suspect the proper strategy now that we
are in August would be to remit 21 pounds for 1997-1998 dues and ask for a
complimentary copy of the August magazine (the only one left in the current
fiscal year).

Geez that's high - are you sure? Was that in the last Horn? I missed
this somehow. I was getting ready to send my 15 pounds (thought it was
15, not 16) but I'm glad you said something. At this rate, I think I'll
send in enough for the lifetime membership. Any idea how much that is
these days? Is Sarah good about replying to e-mails?
