I'm using the same Petronix system. So far - no problems - after about 2000
(mostly freeway) miles over two months. Looking at it, I don't see any
reason for the ring to come apart. The only thing which concerned me when I
installed it is that the underside of some rotors comes in contact with the
top of the ignitor module, which is a little too tall.

I wonder if the ring can be damaged by excess vibration. Is your distributor
in good shape - good shaft bushings and such?

That Petronix would tell you that misset timing caused the ring to come apart
does not give me great faith in the company. Are they saying that you
forced the ring on over the distrubutor shaft without aligning it first and
thus had innaccurate timing and damaged the unit, or.....?

P.S. You should check the timing anyway when installing the system. I found
that because the spark 'smoothed out' and generated fewer random firings, I
was able to advance the timing a degree or two without pinging. When I got
to the point of overadvancement, the pinging was immediate and steady.
