Steve,
   Check you calipers.  I believe they are the same as on the spitfires. 
I had a rattle/noise on my mini van (I know NOT and lbc) that I chased 
for months.  Turned out to be in the calipers.  The mounting bolts had
rubber grommets that they sit in.  These had disintegrated.
The other thing it could be is a bent backing plate and either your
rotor or something (ie, a piece of stray wire that has gotten picked up)
is hitting the backing plate.  
Other than those 2 items, most everything else is pretty solid and should
make more of a heavy metalic clunk, like if your front lower A arms were
loose.  However, I'd check the A arm bushings, ball joints and chassis
mounting points to ensure that everything was tight.
