"The other unique feature I found was that attached to the SAL Plate is a
black plastic
engraved id tag w/ white characters that says "SAS-3-64". I believe
it
may have been some kind of DMV requirement for cars sold out of the model
year since the Title serial number is SAS364B9205539."
I recently bought a 1964 Sunbeam with the same SAS364 as part of the title
serial number - but nowhere on the car. The car had not been registered
for many years. So, the car was deleted from the AAA and DMV computer and
required an inspection to prove that it really existed. During the
inspection, the AAA agent was suspicious that the SAS364 did not show up on
the car. I didn't want any trouble, so I quickly thought of and suggested
that it mean "Sunbeam Alpine, Series 3, 1964". The AAA accepted the
explanation and re-registered it with the SAS364, but the DMV later wrote
that it should be registered without it - as seen on the VIN. Oh, well, it
is a Series 4 anyway.
