I need to better clarify my remarks about manual gearboxes being
direct drive in "their top" gear.
Of course this would be correct for the entire Rootes line as well as
most other marques but what I should have made more clear is that
many manual gearboxs having 5 and 6 speeds, use their top gear as an
overdriving gear...just like an OD unit.
Therefore, driving say a Toyota 5 speed in 4th gear you are using an
engine/driveshaft ratio of 1:1 which is direct drive. Shift into 5th
gear and you have an OD affect which changes the engine/driveshaft
ratio to approx 1: 1.2 ratio, which is about like the Alpine OD
system.
