Jeff, you got many answers correct but blew it on some. However, you were
the first to reply and had lots correct...you win Jarrid's new engine and
all you have to do is pay the shipping and handling costs because he is
such a great guy !
Below, I give the proper answers to the quiz:
Knave plate= hub cap
wing = fender
fender= bumper
over rider= bumper guard
budget lock= my error, there is no US term. This is a lock on a Jaguar E
type bonnet (first of the first series) turned with a small square key. It
was also used on other UK vehicles and has no US equivalent but a Dzus
Fastener comes somewhat close in function.
stand proud= to be slightly higher than the surrounding material. ie. the
O-Ring must stand proud in order to be compressed a bit.
hood= convertible top or soft top
bonnet= hood
facia panel= dash board or instrument panel
gudgeon pin= wrist pin or piston pin
dynamo= generator
cyl head joint washer= head gasket
strangler= carb choke device
accumulator= battery
side draught= side draft (carb. type)
off side= left side (viewed from driver seat)
near side= right side "
trafficator= turning indicator signal light on a small arm which pops out
from body slot. No real US equivalent word except "turn signals".
petrol tank bung= fuel tank drain plug
mascot= hood ornament
step boards= running boards
cubby box= glove compartment on the dashboard panel
dicky seat= rumble seat
dampers= shock absorbers
crown and pinion gear= ring and pinion gear (in final drive housing)
tommy bar= a straight rod which is inserted crosswise into a tubular hex
wrench and is used to apply twist force to the hex wrench. Every older UK
car,and many modern cars which have tool kits has these hollow type tubular
hex wrenches and one tommy bar to turn them. Not many of you guys got this
one I bet ? There is NO US equivalent term but we have used this device in
the US.
