Series V Alpines are known for a rusting problem in this area that
previous series Alpines didn't have. In the Brooklands book for
Alpine one of the reprint articles has a photo of rust in this area
that occurs with Series V Alpines. Maybe you found out why they have
this problem and probably the drain is needed.

I'm in the process of repairing the air intakes on the scuttle of my
Series V Alpine ie those intakes in front of the windsheild- and wonder
if some one can comment on how they should be.
It seems, on mine at least, that the tray inside the intake opening
extends out laterally beyond the drainage holes at the front of the
scuttle panel. Therefore due to the curvature of the scuttle it must
mean that some water will always be trapped laterally and lower than the
drainage holes-surely they weren't built like this?
Any advice appreciated- my panel beater wants to put a drainage hose
from the tray out underneath the car but so far I'm resisting such a
mod.
Thanks Karl
