The early alpines "SI,SII, SIII?" cars came without regulator.
The battery voltage has a linear effect on the gauges.

On the later cars, many people change out the regulator with
a 7810 "10v" voltage regulator. They will last forever "almost",
and are not mechanical like the little thermal regulators.
