One of my Civics shorted there. You can have the coil tested for
output at some auto part stores. Is there power to both sides of the
coil when the points are open? Dirty or tracks in the distributor
cap,condensation etc cause crappy spark too.

When my car started having probs, I found that the distributer had
slipped out of the engine and of course at the worst intersection we
have. The shaft made partial engagement enough to backfire and run
sometimes.
