As Jarrid mentions, the "X" stands for "non-standard". There was a long
thread a year or so back about what everyone thought that meant. As I
recall, even though we all wanted to believe we had a special car, it was
ultimately agreed that just about every Alpine not sold in the home market
(ie England) was considered non-standard, with the only differences being
the turnsignals and where the steering wheel was located.
Now there was one guy who had an "SB" on his car, and I think Dick or Ole
thought that meant it was "special body", and possibly a factory racing
car. I don't recall who the owner was, or if the identity of his car was
ever finally determined.
