Australia in the 60's still had the highest or second highest GDP per
capita in the world and we got low compression Alpines. Because our petrol
was like your beer is.
Read this extract from the first Alpine review in Oz:
The Alpine’s competition breeding shows up in its 1 1/2 -litre engine.
In England full use is made of the quick-cooling characteristics of the
aluminium cylinder head, the compression ratio being 9.2 to 1. But in this
country we are still restricted in our choice of fuels (93 octane being the
best available) and the optional 8.3 to 1 ratio is used instead. This robs
us of 5 bhp (78.5 as against 83.5).

B9XXXXXX L RRO O/D, chassis number with the first L meaning Low Compression
