On non ammeter equiped cars, there is a heavy gauge jumper from the
solenoid post to the "A" terminal on the voltage regulator.
To put in an ammeter, remove this jumper and put the + lead on the
ammeter to the "A" terminal, and the - lead on the ammeter to
the solenoid post.
Terminal "A" is connected to the generator output through the low
resistance current cutout relay, so what you see is the generator
output current or discharge subtarcted from the field current.
As Steve Finberg said in the SV ammeter post, this doesnt let
you see just the battery charging current.
But non the less, is how vehicles of the time were wired.
