In the new Road & Track, in the section about old issues, there is a
humorous quote from the issue 15 years ago:

"In a sly aside, Peter Egan appraised the massive Corvette racing team
through the eyes of a Sprite racer: "[They] adjusted their points with air
wrenches, [and their] sockets started at 1 1/4 in. and went upward to sizes
that frightened Caterpillar mechanics."

Ok, so no Alpine content, but I got a kick out of it.

In Egan's article in this issue, he has a little test to see if your car
has character. Anything over 100 qualified. From my read, I got 250 for
my Alpine. Pretty good I'd say. One of the categories was a class win at
Le Mans by the model. I did not include the Index of Thermal Efficiency
win, as that is really not a class win. So, there would be even more if
winning that counted. Knock offs with those "dangerous" ears also gained
points. But I was fair and did not add those either since the Alpine knock
offs bend in to be safe. I hear that Aston Martin knock offs also fit.
So, the next time I'm at a junk yard and see a DB5, I'll be sure to grab me
a set. I'm sure 007 would have been thrilled to have those knock offs
retro fitted onto his Dr. No Alpine!
