It's a little late to be commenting on your posting - but - can't resist
-
Some years ago I acquired a SIII GT parts car - along with buckets of
other Alpine parts.
The GT steering wheel was - almost complete - except for the fact that
the rim was just a 1/4 - 3/8 steel rod.
Among the treasure of parts was a plastic shopping bag with 8 or 10
pieces of wood of various lengths - in the half shell so to speak ie
half rounds.
Miracle of miracles - the pieces of wood - when fitted around the
steering wheel steel rim made up a complete wooden wheel - with only a
minor gap where a slender chip was broken off one of the pieces.
I shopped for the right kind of glue - (can't remember what it was) -
assembled the whole thing in stages - with clamps along the way - and 8
or 10 coats of varnish later - had a beautifull wooden steering wheel -
the gap where the chip was broken off was pretty well filled with the
many coats of varnish. That wheel was such a pleasure to grip - in the
Black Beauty SIV where I used it for a couple of years.
The Mole now has that car back on the road (I think) - maybe he can
comment on how the wooden steering wheel is holding up?

P.S. Would love to know how the wheel came to be in so many pieces -
but complete - the fellow from whom I bought the parts car and the parts
didn't know either. Somewhere out there in Alpine Heaven - there is a
person who can answer that question.
