Mine did that five or six years ago too. I wasn't real big on
determining the cause of the problem at the moment, so I rigged a little
coil spring onto the lever from underneath the car. It remains that way
today. It's not real elegant, but it works.

Last summer I was rummaging through the parts shed when I uncovered an
extra early-car emergency brake handle, and it was without spring in the
button action too. I didn't have time to look into it then either, but
it did look to me like the spring must be inside the ratchet mechanism
somehow.

Funny how a problem diminishes in importance once you implement a
"temporary" fix.
