Certainly by New Zealand standards Alpines and Tigers are ridiculously
cheap in the US. However I think it's fair to say that even over here
Alpines have dropped markedly in the last few years. Unfortunately this
is true of all classic cars (and in many respects the prices of alpines
have dropped less than other marques eg MGB).
I have restored my Alpine over the last 14 years and I estimate that it
has cost me NZ$25,000. Add to that the NZ$8,000 I paid for it and the
interest (at 25% per annum for 5 years) on the car loan and it's cost me
a lot more than the NZ$14,000-15000 I would get for it now (not that I
would ever sell it). Sure I'm an overpaid, overworked and when it comes
to cars relatively unskilled individual and hence I paid people to do a
lot of the work (and consequently had some very bad experiences ie I
rebuilt the engine 100 miles after a complete shop rebuild- Never went
right probably because of the wrong camshaft, silicone blocking all the
water ways (they fitted the headgasket with silicon), cotton waste
ground into the bearings and the aluminuim head welded up with a cast
iron welding rod- I sued and won).
Anyone who buys our cars as an investment better be thinking in the real
long term. Far better to simply forget about the dollars and enjoy them.
