1998 British Car Days, Las Cruces Style!
For a few days in April Las Cruces will resemble the most far-flung corner of
the British Empire when the city's Young Park is taken over for 1998's British
Car Days. For the seventh consecutive year the British Motorcar Club of
Southern New Mexico will host the event which promises to be bigger and better
than ever. This year the event will have several expanded and added features
including a sit-down dinner, an English Tea, and, for the first time, the
automotive exhibition will benefit Casa de Peregrinos, the Las Cruces
Emergency Food Bank.
"We confidently expect to have well over 60 cars participating this year,"
Club President Ed Townley says. "We'll have rare and exotic British motorcars
from the 30's to the 90's on display. Probably close to a million dollars in
rare vehicles will be shown on the grass under the trees on Sunday, April 26."
The list of car marques expected to participate reads like a "who's who" of
classic British vehicles: Sunbeam, Morgan, MG, Jaguar, Austin-Healey, Lotus,
Triumph, TVR, Hillman, Elva, and many other marques will be on display.
Although registration and a "Meet and Greet" happy hour get together with hors
d'oeuvres and no-host bar is set for Friday evening, April 24, the event
really gets under way on Saturday when a Boot Sale and a Road Rallye through
the beautiful Mesilla Valley are scheduled. Transportation to nearby Olde
Mesilla will be available for those who feel the need for a shopping
opportunity on the picturesque Mesilla Plaza. In response to numerous comments
from attendees in previous years, a buffet dinner has been added to the
Saturday evening schedule.
Sunday morning the participating vehicles will form up for a parade—some have
called it a "rolling concours"—through Las Cruces to Young Park where they
will be on display from 10 AM until 2 PM when trophies will be awarded. While
the cars are on display several fun events are tentatively planned including
traditional British Darts and a Piston Toss, a traditional British event where
an automotive piston is pitched for distance and accuracy. Several hundred
spectators are expected to examine the cars while they are on display.
The car show classes will be set based on the number of cars of the various
marques that participate. In addition to class trophies, trophies will be
awarded for People's Choice, Best of Show, Most Distant Entry, President's
Award, and several others. Sunday's automotive display is free to spectators
but the Club requests each spectator to donate a can of food to benefit Casa
de Peregrinos.
