I have a set of Dunlop wire wheels which I bought new sometime around
1987/88 from Valley Wire Wheel in North Hollywood. The guy who then owned
the shop told me that these Dunlops were better than the original ones for
the car. He said that they were the improved version made for the Midgets
of years after the Alpine was no longer made. I do not know if that is
true or not. But, I have had no problem with the wheels since buying them.
For what it is worth, on the inside of the rim the numbers "XDM458" are
stamped. 458 is the Midget/Alpine wheel. 466 is the Spitfire wheel that
does not fit.
Valley Wire Wheel is now owned by someone else. But, I have talked to the
new owner on the phone and he seems pretty good. I've even talked to
British Wire Wheel up in Santa Cruz (the one Kevin suggested). They did
endorse Valley Wire Wheel.
As to non-wire knock offs, Moss Motors sells a really nice Mini-lite style
wheel with a splined hub in the center. However, the price of a full set
is about as much as the average Alpine/Spridget is worth!
I have also seen that wire wheel place on Lincoln in Santa Moncia/Venice
area. I think it is called Moreno Wheels. For some reason, I always
thought they dealth with Italian wheels only - but then why would anyone
get that specialized?
