Carpets just hide the dirt, where it eats at the pile, a problem I would dispatch to some kind of mat that can be beaten clean. The rest of the floor can be handled with a wet rag.

I don't know about your part of the world, but up here there's a sand that is used for street sanding during the winter (that's still scattered around throughout the summer) that just defies cleaning without giving a carpet a severe beating, which means removal. Vacuuming most of it out of any pile is a real hassle. I've seen it grind away at the carpet on my Honda over the last five years, and spent way too many afternoons trying to get it looking cleaned.
