I am not so certain of this.

The series 1 and 2s had the cross flow radiator, which had an expansion chamber mounted to the thermo housing. The chamber required a second port thats purpose was perhaps to de-stagnate the water in the chamber.

These pumps have a "Y" pipe where normally the single heater return is located on the later pumps.

I have used a SV pump on the earlier cars in a pinch, and other than making up an in-line "T" to compensate for the lack of one on the pump, all worked out well.
