I just completed my rebuild a few weeks ago. The freeze plug at the back of
the block showed signs of significant leakage in the past. When I replaced it,
the block was full (at least around cylinder #4) with a bunch of crud. At the
time I took this to be some kind of stop leak crap used by the DPO. Now that
this thread has started, I think back and am quite sure it was casting sand.
I went to a three core radiator two years ago to solve my overheating problems.
But now after the rebuild, the car is cooler (no pun intended!) than ever
before. Certainly some of this can be attributed to the rebuild, but how much
is from the removal of the casting sand?
So all you series V guys should pull the block, the rear freeze plug and clean
out the casting sand!
