casting sand?

I've been reading the posts about casting sand
and I seem to remember a similar statement in
the Imp club newsletter. Seems a amatuer rebuilder
recommended knocking out the "casting sand" usually
found around the cylinders while the head was off.
The editor commented that it was not casting sand
but aluminum oxide from corrosion. Imps are plauged
by overheating caused by excessive corrosion if the
coolant does not contain anti-corrosion agents.
It has an aluminum head and block, of course.

BTW, I was preparing to remove my transmission this
afternoon, and when I removed the clutch slave cylinder,
it was bolted to the rear of the mounts (with a collection
of washers and large nuts used as spacers!). It looks
more natural mounted to the front of the mounts. I know
I've read about that here, but I just assumed that when
I got the car, the cylinder would be correctly mounted.
But I changed my mind when I found the fan belt tension
set with a block of wood between the alternater and the
block! Anyone got an alternator mount for sale that
will fit on my 1600 block?

Robert
